比爾蓋茲在自己的部落格上表示，在整理建議書單時，發現相對於一般假日閱讀所強調的輕鬆小品。這次選擇的主題都滿沈重的，這些書主要是關於性別平等、政治極端化、氣候變遷，和生活的殘酷現實。他補充說明，不過即使議題嚴肅，但這五本書讀起來一點都不沈重。每位作家都能在不過於簡化的情況下，將豐富的主題寫得引人入勝。

比爾蓋茲透露這本書是女兒 Jennifer 推薦他的。「我對今日許多女性經歷的虐待和不公平，發自內心有更強烈的感覺，」他在部落格上提到，「並對在美國，甚至世界各地，正致力解決這些問題的人們表示感激。」
在這本書裡，作者 Ezra Klein 呼籲美國的政治環境，身份認同已經走向極端。書中以心理學的視角處理美國政治左右派的現狀，認為人們的自我認同（包括政黨），在做出決定和看待世界方面，發揮巨大的作用。
比爾蓋茲表示，這本書基本上是關於美國政治的討論，但也有對人類心理學的迷人觀察。
Amor Towles 的作品不是第一次出現在比爾蓋茲書單上，2019 年的夏日書單他也曾推薦過同作者的另一本作品：莫斯科紳士。
這本小說故事背景設立在 1950 年代，主角是一位剛剛從內布拉斯加州農場被釋放出來的 18 歲少年，他計劃帶著 8 歲的弟弟去加州展開新生活，但是意外被兩位在設施認識的青年阻撓。
作者在書中傳遞了一個想法：每個人的旅程，從來都不會如同預期的那般順利、沒有意外發生。

這部小說描述氣候變遷將如何影響人性，背景設定在不久的將來，一個虛構的全球組織，率先開展了各種努力來對抗氣候變化。
比爾蓋茨一直對於全球氣候變遷議題相當關注，他認為這部作品非常複雜，但作者透過一個引人入勝且激勵人心的故事，同時解釋了氣候變化背後的科學。
這是環境科學名譽教授 Vaclav Smil 的最新著作，深入探討了現代社會的幾個基礎議題，如能源生產或者全球化等問題。作者希望減少人類對世界的理解缺陷，並針對人類生存和繁榮最基本的主要現實狀況做說明，以科學的角度，解釋世界究竟如何運作，提供主導世界經濟的七大關鍵，讓人類更能意識到未來的限制和機會。
